NXNE 2014: Danny Brown at Yonge-Dundas Square

If you’re looking for some hip-hop this NXNE, may I recommend Danny Brown. Highlights include:

– Killer beats

– Wicked flow

– A mosh pit (complete with crowd surfing)

– A dance party (for those who don’t mosh)

– A hip-hop sing-a-long

Yes, everyone was seriously digging the likeable Detroit emcee as he turned up the bass at Yonge-Dundas Square last night. The man has some very enthusiastic fans (who know every, single word to every, single track).

It’s not too late; you can still catch Danny Brown tonight at the The Mod Club. It’ll be really fun, promise.

NXNE 2013: Ludacris at Yonge-Dundas Square

It’s that time of year again, Toronto: North by Northeast 2013 (June 10-16)!  For the next week, the Telescope will be your prime source for NXNE previews and reviews, so stay tuned!

Sunday night has officially become NXNE’s hip-hop night at Yonge-Dundas Square – an excellent way to close out the festival, in my humble opinion.  This year, the original headliner Big Boi had to cancel due to a knee injury, but fortunately for us, southern peer Ludacris stepped in as understudy.

We were graced by Hollywood Luda; gone are the days of corn rows and giant arms as seen above, but he knew fans wanted to hear the big tunes, and he was more than happy to oblige.  You name it, he played it: “Southern Hospitality”, “Stand Up”, “Move Bitch”, “Fantasy” and on and on. Even though everyone was shouting the lyrics, I have to admit, there’s something highly entertaining in hearing a chorus of girls screaming along to “My Chick Bad” (myself included).

“Get Back” was the closer. I told you; nothing but the hits.

NXNE 2013: The National at Yonge-Dundas Square

It’s that time of year again, Toronto: North by Northeast 2013 (June 10-16)!  For the next week, the Telescope will be your prime source for NXNE previews and reviews, so stay tuned!

I’ve always described The National as the equivalent to your favourite sweater – perfect for when you want to snuggle up and feel cozy, warm and content.  That feeling was magnified by 100 as Matt Berninger’s beautiful baritone filled the night sky.

NXNE seems to be raising the bar on their free shows year after year.  Friday night’s performance likely has most attendees wondering who could possibly top it in 2014. A balanced set of new songs and old favourites, the free show rivaled any costly concert at the Air Canada Centre.  Happy fans closed their eyes and swayed to “Pink Rabbits” and got moving to crowd pleasers “Abel” and “Mr. November”, while Berninger moved through the crowd with the help of security to carry the incredibly long cord attached to his microphone.  You are aware that they now have wireless models, right Matt?

The night couldn’t have ended on a more perfect note; an a cappella version of “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks” for a fan sing-along, and oh, did we sing.

NXNE 2013: Smif-N-Wessun – “Bucktown”

It’s that time of year again, Toronto: North by Northeast 2013 (June 10-16)!  For the next two weeks, the Telescope will be your prime source for NXNE previews and reviews, so stay tuned!

Old school fans have got to be psyched; not only are hip-hop duo Smif-N-Wessun performers this North by Northeast, but they’re playing not one but two shows! Excited? I know I am.

If you want to hear classics like “Bucktown” up close, make sure to check out Tek and Steele at The Drake Underground on June 15. If you’re impressed by their performance, head over to Yonge-Dundas Square on June 16 for round two.
