“Comeback Kid” is quite the departure for the singer-songwriter. It’s not just the eyeliner that’s reminiscent of Siouxsie, but her entire sound seems to have become fuller and heavier on the synths. I’m sure she’s received some blow-back from die-hard fans, but overall, it’s safe to say that the Van Etten evolution is working and working well.
As one YouTuber eloquently put it: “If you couldn’t see the Dark Wave in Sharon Van Etten all along, maybe you didn’t really get her at all. That frequency was always there.” Indeed it was.
