The Telescope presents: the top albums of 2015. We gathered best-of lists from staff and contributors, crunched some numbers and came up with a list of records that unanimously wowed us this year.
It’s easy to mistake Majical Cloudz’ third release as just another sad, D.I.Y. hipster album, but you quickly realize that there is more to Are You Alone? than it’s melancholic first impression.
There’s a difference between sad and depressing; depressing music can make a situation feel worse, dragging you further down and making you feel more alone than when you first pressed play.
But sad can be comforting. “Are you alone?” isn’t a question about loneliness, but more about solace. Someone is asking because they care. They’ll keep you company while you have a good cry, or just sit and watch TV in silence if you wish.
After several listens to Majical Cloudz, you realize that you aren’t really alone.
