Axxa/Abraxas – Axxa/Abraxas

axxaabraxas

We don’t know what an Axxa or an Abraxas is, but there’s a tad more clarity to be found once you’re past Ben Asbury’s weirdo moniker (albeit a psychotropic sort of clarity). Consider Axxa/Abraxas a reimagining of Woods’ pastoral rock that was sent hurtling backwards through time with little more than electric guitars and a fistful of psychedelic drugs (no coincidence, then, that Woods member Jarvis Taveniere was called in to produce this self-titled debut).

On occasion, individual instruments on Axxa/Abraxas approach the territory mined during Tigermilk through “Legal Man”-era Belle & Sebastian; check out the mind bending “I Almost Fell,” below, for a sample.

Easy to immerse yourself in this one. As Asbury says in “Beyond the Wind,” “The only place you find the truth’s inside.”
