Neneh Cherry – Blank Project

Blank Project, released earlier this year via Smalltown Supersound is at times minimal, at times tribal or just plain synthy. The album’s opener “Across the Water” is about as minimal as it gets, comprised only of Cherry’s vocals and a slow drum beat, with things getting far more tribal in the track that immediately follows.

Of course, we can’t ignore the synthesizers (or at least, I can’t). One automatically assumes their presence on any song that features indie dance queen Robyn, and “Out of the Black” is no exception.  Blank Project appropriately closes with “Everything” (below), combining all elements into one seven minute track.

This is a far cry from the “Buffalo Stance” Neneh Cherry of yore.

PS: Speaking of “Buffalo Stance”, let’s just post it for #ThrowbackThursday, okay?
