This is probably the most grown-up album The Telescope has ever sunk its teeth into. We’re not exclusively boors, you know.
So how did Alejandra Ribera’s second record win us over? She caters to our predilections, on this one—primarily drinking—and bounces deftly from English to Spanish to French—an approach that’ll convince most loutish listeners that they’re taking part in a mysterious and sophisticated endeavor.
Lean back, then, and let La boca transport you from fiesta to siesta, with stops at most points in between. Think Basia Bulat fronting Calexico and sporting a 4 Non Blondes swagger (how Ribera’s cover of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” works is beyond us, but there it is).
